DIY Dog Treats for a Happy Dog

There is no denying that an out-of-the-blue dog treat makes for a happy dog. But, how can owners ensure that dog treats are healthy, natural and budget friendly? The trick is to make them at home. Listed here are three DIY dog treat recipes that will ensure a happy dog with a healthy lifestyle.

Pumpkin Dog Treats

Pumpkin is a great ingredient for dogs because it is high in fiber and vitamins but low in calories. Additionally, pumpkin promotes good digestive health for dogs. To prepare this recipe, gather the following ingredients while your oven preheats to 375o F:

  • ¾ cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder

Stir together the first three ingredients until combined. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir, noting that the dough will be dry. Roll the dough to ¼’’ thickness and use your favorite cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Place the cut-outs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, with each treat spaced 1’’ apart. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes and store when cooled in an airtight container.

Cinnamon Honey Treats

Cinnamon and honey are two sweet treats for humans that make for happy dogs. This easy recipe calls for the following ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cup flour
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 TBSP honey

First, pre-heat the oven to 350o F. Next, combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well, until dough forms a ball. Roll the dough to ¼’’ thickness and use your favorite cookie cutter to form shapes. Place the cut-outs on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake the treats for 15 minutes or until edges are brown. Refrigerate cooled leftovers.

Apple Chips

Few dogs can resist the tangy sweetness of an apple. If you are looking for a truly easy DIY treat recipe that will ensure a happy dog, look no further.

The only ingredient necessary for this recipe is apples (cinnamon is optional).

First, slice and core the apple, making sure to remove all the seeds. Next, slice the apple into ¼’’ thick slices. Layer the apples on top of a cookie drying rack, then place the drying rack on top of a baking sheet. Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon, if desired. Place the cookie sheet in the oven and set it to 175o F. Bake the apples for 5 – 6 hours, or until the desired consistency is reached. Store cooled treats in an airtight container.

While your treats might be perfect, no dog can live entirely on treats. To ensure that your dog is healthy, you have to pay attention to all sources of their nutrition.
