5 Ways to Prevent Boredom in Dogs

Unfortunately, thousands (if not millions) of dogs are rehomed every year because owners are simply unable to prevent boredom in their pets. Listed here are five ways to prevent boredom in dogs for a happier and healthier household.

Exercise

The top way to prevent boredom in dogs is to provide adequate exercise for the animal’s breed, energy level, and life stage. A tired dog is a happy dog, and a happy dog is one that does not have the energy to destroy the couch! Take your dog for an extra long walk, run, or bicycle ride in the morning to see how behavior changes throughout the day. The Actijoy dog tracker monitors activity constantly and will tell you if your dog is getting the exercise it needs.

Regular Play Dates

Play dates with other dogs are a great way to address many common problems, including boredom. Not only does a play date provide exercise, but it also gives your pup necessary socialization and mental stimulation. When each of these three necessities are met, dogs are unlikely to suffer from boredom.

Mentally Stimulating Challenges

If extended exercise or play dates are not able to be incorporated into your dog’s lifestyle (or even if they are!) create mentally stimulating challenges for your pup to stave off boredom. Provide interactive toys for your dog that make him or her think in order to earn a reward. Examples include KONGtoys or interactive puzzles. For hound dogs that like to use their noses, owners can hide treats around the house for their pups to sniff out and find.

Learning a New Trick

If you would like to be more involved with busting your dog’s boredom, teach your pet a new trick. Spending just 10 – 30 minutes per day learning new tricks or practicing old ones can provide adequate mental stimulation for most dogs.

Bringing Home a New Canine Friend

Finally, some dogs simply do best when they have canine friends. Consider whether your dog is bored because he or she does not like being left alone. To consider whether a second dog is right for you, borrow a friends pet or foster a dog for a short period of time. the Actijoy tracking system is multi dog-friendly and you can add more dogs to the app to make sure that all your dogs are active when they should be.

Ultimately, boredom behaviors can be destructive and annoying. You can prevent boredom in your dog by providing adequate exercise, scheduling regular play dates, providing mentally stimulating challenges, teaching your dog a new trick, or giving your dog a canine brother or sister.
